As you start to plan your wedding, you might have family and friends ask to help plan it. And while this might sound nice at first, it is not the best move! Your wedding planner needs to be a professional, not a relative or friend. And this is for quite a few reasons!
It’s essential to have someone who is not emotionally involved to manage your wedding day. Properly coordinating the wedding day and all the tasks and details that go along with it is a highly stressful job. While wedding and event planners love it, and it gives them an adrenaline rush to coordinate your day, your family members will be left feeling like this was way too much to take on.
You need a wedding planner to take charge of the wedding day. Your coordinator or planner will be able to provide concrete solutions to any problems that arise and multi-task, and stay calm under pressure. Trust us when we tell you, this takes experience! If a vendor is late, would a relative know what to do? If the wedding is behind schedule, will they know how to adjust the timeline?
Here are five questions you should ask yourself before asking a relative to plan your day.
Relatives are first and foremost guests at your wedding. Shouldn’t they be able to enjoy the day as much as everyone else? 10 times out of 10, if you have a relative manage your wedding day they will look at all the fun everyone else is having and want to join in too. Instead of enjoying your wedding, your relative will be busy managing the wedding and timeline. On your wedding day, we will ensure that your timeline is carried out perfectly, vendors arrive on time, guests are comfortable, and laughter fills the room.
Will they be able to look back and say they enjoyed the wedding day? A wedding day has a lot of moving pieces in many different areas. While you are having your ceremony, the planner is focusing on making sure it is running smoothly and everything is running on time. Would you want your relative to enjoy the ceremony or be worried about something else?
While you are dancing the night away, your planner is working with the vendors to get the cake cutting ready, talking to the DJ, lighting candles that went out and answering guest questions. If you have a relative do this, they won’t be able to dance and enjoy the night! Hiring a wedding planner will ensure all of your guests can enjoy the reception.
Do they have experience in managing a large team that are all performing different tasks? A wedding day involves a lot of vendors. From the musicians to the officiant, to the venue workers, to the catering staff, a wedding can have over ten vendors, with large teams. Some weddings have 20+ people to manage and coordinate! This is where a professional comes in. Someone who has not planned and managed dozens of weddings will know how to handle a large team and what to do if there is an issue. Having someone who does weddings for a living will always give you the best outcome.
Will they honor your wishes and plans ahead of their own in any situation that arises on the wedding day? As your wedding planner, I will make sure that situations are taken care of, and you will not have to worry about a thing! But a relative? They will most likely ask for your advice on the wedding day, which can be extremely stressful. Another key difference is that wedding planners know how to plan ahead of time. They know what to expect and how to handle any situations that arise.
Instead of getting their groove on the dance floor, will they be able to detach themselves to the fun of the day? Or do they have the ability to stay calm under pressure and handle issues graciously? A wedding day can be incredibly stressful. Not only do you have to manage a bridal party, a couple, and guests, but you also have to manage a large team of vendors. Will your relative know what to do if something pops up? Will they be able to handle countless questions from the vendors and guests without getting overwhelmed? But most importantly, wouldn’t you rather they enjoy the day?
Remember that hiring a wedding planner or coordinator on your day is the best investment you can make for your wedding. The last thing you, or your relative, should deal with on the wedding day is stress! Wouldn’t you rather have them really enjoy the day as a guest? That is why at Simone Vega Events, we know the value of hiring a wedding planner!
